Connecting Batteries In Series And Parallel

Series and parallel

Connecting batteries into series or parallel doesn’t have to be difficult, it is in fact quite simple-

It is possible for 2 x 12 Volt 100Ah batteries to be connected in different ways.
The top diagram (series) is negative to positive, this increases the voltage and leaves the amperage the same (24Volt 100Ah).
The bottom (parallel) is positive to positive and negative to negative, thus increasing the amperage and leaving the voltage the same (12Volt 200Ah).

It is possible to connect more than one string of batteries to a series parallel connection, therefore increasing both the amperage and voltage.
Most emergency lighting systems utilise this type of connection, this is commonly used in banks of 2 volt batteries to achieve the required amperage/voltage mix.
