Car Battery Technologies – Lead-Acid, EFB and AGM Lead-Acid

As a car owner, you have quite a few options to consider when it comes time to have your car battery replaced. At County Battery, we offer an extensive selection of car batteries to suit all makes and models and we’re always on hand to help customers understand which type of car battery best suits their needs. Here’s a quick look at the three most popular car battery types – lead-acid, EFB and AGM lead-acid batteries. Lead-Acid Invented in 1859 and by far the oldest rechargeable battery type, lead-acid batteries are remarkably efficient and long-lasting. Lead-acid batteries have a low energy-to-weight and energy-to-volume ratio, but as they have a very high power-to-energy ratio, they are therefore able to provide high current surges. What’s more, they also have a high charge/charge efficiency, as high as 50 – 95 percent. Lead-acid batteries account for nearly half of all battery sales worldwide, making them the most popular car battery type. County Battery offers an extensive range of lead-acid batteries from well-known and trustworthy names such as Duracell, Exide, Fuller and Enforcer. EFB EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery) technology is widely considered more advanced than lead-acid technology, but these batteries also tend to be more expensive, depending on factors such as output and manufacturer. These batteries are widely used by European and Japanese automotive manufacturers because they offer a number of notable benefits, including reliable starting, even taking into account the increased electrical demands of the modern vehicle. Built for higher performance and boasting twice the cyclic stability of lead-acid batteries, they’re an excellent choice for modern and high-performance cars, along with all other vehicles. In addition to reliable starting performance, the advantages of EFB batteries include their outstanding cycling ability, longer lifespan compared to lead-acid batteries, lower cost than AGM batteries, and their superior start-stop functionality. However, they’re not without their disadvantages, which include their inability to support regenerative braking, and the fact that they offer less durability and power than AGM batteries. AGM AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) batteries are a variety of lead-acid batteries. They differ from regular ‘flooded’ lead-acid batteries in that instead of the electrolyte flooding the plates freely, it’s held in glass mats made of thin glass fibres so as to increase the surface area and hold the electrolyte in place on the cells. They offer a number of benefits, hence their often higher price tag than other battery types. These benefits include fast charging and discharging times, excellent efficiency, reliability in all weather conditions, high performance, excellent tolerance to deep cycling, and reliable upgrades to any type of flooded lead-acid battery. We offer an extensive selection of lead-acid AGM batteries, including Odyssey and Fuller premium selections, along with our affordable range of Enforcer batteries. At County Battery, the selection of batteries that we have in stock is immense, so if you’re looking for a new lead-acid, AGM lead-acid or EFB battery for your car or vehicle, please get in touch with the team and we’ll happily help you to understand your options.
